What are the ZigBee Smart Energy specifications?

Is ZigBee a technical standard or a product?

  • The term Zigbee is a registered trademark of this group, not a single technical standard. The Alliance publishes application profiles that allow multiple OEM vendors to create interoperable products. The relationship between IEEE 802.15.4 and Zigbee is similar to that between IEEE 802.11 and the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Can Zigbee PRO devices join and operate on a legacy Zigbee network?

  • A ZigBee Pro device may join and operate on a legacy ZigBee network and vice versa. Due to differences in routing options, ZigBee Pro devices must become non-routing ZigBee end devices (ZEDs) on a legacy ZigBee network, and legacy ZigBee devices must become ZEDs on a ZigBee Pro network.

How far can a Zigbee Device transmit data?

  • Its low power consumption limits transmission distances to 10–100 meters line-of-sight, depending on power output and environmental characteristics. ZigBee devices can transmit data over long distances by passing data through a mesh network of intermediate devices to reach more distant ones.

Does Zigbee binding work with Sep meters?Does Zigbee binding work with Sep meters?

The ZigBee binding currently is not designed to work with SEP for a number of reasons (the first being the one I’ve mentioned above). A special version of the binding can work with these meters, but it’s not something that’s available as it really requires the approval of the energy provider. Thanks.
